The title that previously read "Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan" became "Using Claude Code with your Max plan." Claude Code, which had been bundled with the $20/month Pro tier since launch, appeared to have been moved to Max-tier-only ($100/month and up).
Word traveled fast. By the morning of April 22, Reddit, Hacker News, and AI Twitter were full of posts asking the same question: did Anthropic just price out their indie developer audience?
The panic lasted about 36 hours. By the afternoon of April 22, Anthropic had reversed the public-facing change and Amol Avasare (Head of Growth) had clarified on social media that the move was a 2% A/B test of new prosumer signups, that existing Pro and Max subscribers were never affected, and that the team had reverted both the pricing page and the documentation.
The technical change is over. The downstream impact on the wider ecosystem is not. Indie sellers who build for Claude Code users (cheat sheets, plugins, tools, courses) are still seeing the chilling effect 4 days later, with material revenue impact.

The news hits Reddit r/ClaudeAI, then r/singularity, then r/programming. Hacker News thread climbs to the front page. Twitter accounts in the AI tooling space pile on with screenshots and concerned reactions.
The central concerns:
- Did existing Pro users lose access to Claude Code?
- Is the price about to go from $20 to $100 for Pro buyers who depend on Claude Code daily?
- Is this Anthropic's quiet way of preparing for a permanent move?
None of these had answers yet because Anthropic had not announced anything publicly.
April 22, midday PT

The 2% A/B Test Is Still Running
This is the part that gets missed in most coverage. Anthropic did not cancel the experiment. They reverted the public-facing UI and the support docs to remove the confusion for the 98% of users not in the experiment. But the experiment itself continues, gating Claude Code to Max for 2% of new Pro signups.
What this means in practice:

For people who buy and sell things in the Claude Code ecosystem, the actual technical state matters less than the perceived state.
Indie sellers in this space (myself included, since I run a content and tools site for Claude Code users) saw revenue measurably drop starting April 21 and have not fully recovered by April 25. Speaking from direct experience: my own product sales went from a normal daily baseline to zero for 4 consecutive days, despite having no actual product change, no traffic drop, and no payment system issues.
Why the lag past the technical reversal? Three reasons:

3. The 2% experiment continuing means the threat isn't fully dead. Sophisticated Pro subscribers know the test continues. They're holding off on Claude Code-tied purchases until Anthropic decides the experiment outcome publicly.
The net effect: 4+ days of measurably depressed buying behavior in the indie Claude Code seller economy, even though only 2% of users actually lost access.
What Indie Sellers Are Doing About It
Few patterns I'm seeing in the Claude Code seller community:
Diversifying away from Claude Code-only positioning. Sellers who marketed products as "Claude Code prompts" are reframing as "Claude prompts (works with Claude.ai or Claude Code)." The audience overlap is large enough that this isn't dishonest, and it removes the dependency on Anthropic's Pro tier policy.
Pausing aggressive marketing campaigns. Several sellers I know paused planned email blasts and ad spend during the chilling effect window. Running a discount campaign while half your audience is uncertain about their tier access is wasteful.
Building Claude.ai-only products. The Claude.ai chat interface is unaffected by any Pro/Max debate. Products designed for Claude.ai chat (system prompts, persona libraries, custom GPTs-equivalent setups) don't depend on Claude Code being on any particular tier.
Watching the 2% experiment. If Anthropic decides to make the change permanent based on the experiment data, that will be a market-shaping event for the entire Claude Code seller ecosystem. Most sellers I know are quietly building optionality so they're not crippled by either outcome.
What This Tells Us About Anthropic's Strategy
Three implications worth flagging:
1. Anthropic is willing to test pricing structures that affect indie developer purchasing behavior. This is normal for any SaaS company at scale. But it's worth knowing that Pro tier composition is not stable. Things can move.
2. The communication around pricing tests will likely improve. The April 21-22 incident embarrassed Anthropic. Future tests are likely to be either smaller (without leaking to public-facing pricing) or accompanied by better communication. The third option (tests of similar size with similar communication) is least likely because the goodwill cost was visible.
3. The Pro tier's structure is contested internally. The fact that an experiment was approved at all suggests there's a real argument inside Anthropic about whether $20/month for Pro plus Claude Code is the right unit economics. That argument hasn't been resolved. Expect more pricing experiments over the next 12 months, just not as visible.
What to Do as a Pro Subscriber
If you signed up for Pro before April 21, you still have Claude Code on your account and there's no immediate action to take. Continue using as normal.
If you signed up on or after April 21 and don't see Claude Code in your tier, you might be in the 2% experiment. Two options:
- Cancel and resubscribe. May land you outside the 2% bucket on the new signup. Anthropic hasn't confirmed whether bucket assignment is sticky.
- Email Anthropic support directly. If you depend on Claude Code for daily work, ask explicitly to be moved out of any pricing test. They have responded to these requests during the April 21-22 incident.
What to Do as a Claude Code-Adjacent Seller
If you sell tools, content, or services to Claude Code users:
Short-term (this week): Stop reading zero-sales days as a signal about your product or pricing. The audience is in a holding pattern. Don't run aggressive discounts that you'll regret next week. Don't pivot products based on 4 days of weird data.
Medium-term (next 2-4 weeks): Reframe marketing to be Claude-Code-OR-Claude.ai compatible. Most prompt-engineering work transfers cleanly between the two surfaces. The audience is bigger when you don't lock yourself to one interface.
Long-term: Build at least one product line that's deliberately Claude.ai-only or API-only, so you have a safe revenue stream regardless of how Anthropic prices Claude Code in future tier experiments.
Honest Take
Anthropic ran a normal A/B test, with abnormally large blast radius because it leaked to the public-facing pricing page. They reverted within 36 hours. The damage to Pro user trust is real but not catastrophic. The damage to indie sellers' April revenue is more measurable than most people are talking about, because the chilling effect outlasted the technical change by 3-5 days.
The 2% experiment continuing is the part to watch. If Anthropic decides to make Claude Code Max-only based on the experiment data, that's a structural change to the Claude Code seller economy. If they decide to keep Claude Code on Pro permanently, the chilling effect dissipates and revenue normalizes.
My guess: Claude Code stays on Pro. The community response to the April 21-22 incident was loud enough that the goodwill cost of a permanent move is now factored in, and Anthropic is unlikely to take it. But the experiment running invisibly means Anthropic isn't committing to that outcome publicly yet.
Watch the next 60 days. Anthropic typically makes pricing decisions at quarter-end. If Claude Code stays on Pro through the end of June without any new test surfacing, the situation has stabilized.
